Potemkin Village – Air Mail From London

Air mail from London has arrived. I had been expecting this package from the Royal College of Art artist, Fei Yue, ever since she initiated this collaboration. She designed five 1960s styled China army uniforms (the blue shirt I was wearing). And I am highly horned to be one of those five creative package receivers she chose.

I crave that people feed my soul. Starting with telling me the story of Potemkin Village, Potemkin Village was the deceptive glorious village Prince Grigory Potemkin built to impress his lover Catherine the Great. In 1787, Catherine II took her journey to Crimea. Along the banks of the Dnieper River, Grigory Potemkin erected fake prosperous illusion along her route.

Fei kept the traditional military uniform pattern in her contemporary army uniforms, although those five vary in different sizes, details and fabrics. She left the space for me and Summer Sins Style’s photographers Maya (http://www.mayaluophoto.com) and Circle (http://www.jiancircle.com) to generate the content – how to present the concept of her art. All she asked for was that I need to wear this vintage inspired army uniform. And hopefully Summer Sins Style has completed her mission!

Thanks to Prince Grigory Potemkin pleasing his lover and queen, Potemkin Village is a politics and economics phrase now. As an artist, Fei’s Potemkin Village project continues her art philosophy – “Water flow varies. Sometimes it overflows, and sometimes it flows normally. But the stream bed is always the function of the flow dynamics. Any subculture needs a stream bed, and I’m helping the stream bed always keep the water line,” said Fei.

Like all of the artist Summer Sins Style has collaborated with, Fei is not info self – promoting and self – selling. I can’t speak for the artist if this project has any meaning involving in politics, but Summer Sins Style always work with the sophisticated and insightful artists. When it comes to the meaning of our project, I think audience have their own interpretations (Just to make it political ðŸ˜‰ ).
